"The Hobbit" Tops "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" In Box Office Sequel Battle

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" topped "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" in a battle for box office dominance on the weekend before Christmas.


Taking the top spot for the second week in a row, "The Hobbit "sequel won $31.5 million, compared to $26.8 for the second Anchorman installment.


The animated family flick" Frozen" came out third with $19.2 million.


"American Hustle" expanded to wide release this weekend and earned $19.1 million.

Ending in fifth place was "Saving Mr. Banks" after raking in $9.3 million.


 Rounding out the Top 10 were "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" ($8.8 million), "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" ($8.5 million), "Walking with Dinosaurs" ($7.3 million), the Bollywood movie "Dhoom 3" ($3.3 million) and "Thor: The Dark World" ($1.3 million).
