Harry Shearer Leaves "The Simpsons" Over Contract Dispute

Harry Shearer, who is best known for his long-running roles on The Simpsons, is officially leaving the series over a contract dispute.

Shearer, 71, claims that his contract is not being renewed after he held out in talks for the new seasons as he wanted to do side projects in addition to the classic animated show.

"From (Simpsons executive producer) James L. Brooks' lawyer: "Show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best,"" the actor tweeted. He later shared: "This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best."

Shearer has provided voices for many of the fan favorite characters over the years, such as  Principal Skinner, Kent Brockman, Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle and Dr. Marvin Monroe.
