Meredith Vieira Shares Her Domestic Abuse Story (VIDEO)

Meredith Vieira shared her own experience about domestic violence in a segment set to air on Wednesday's episode of her talk show "Meredith" in the wake of the Ray Rice scandal.


Vieira, 60, explains why she actually stayed in an abusive relationship with the man she "loved," talks about how the abuse escalated and opens up about how she finally escaped.

"I want to explain to you why I stayed," the host revealed to her studio audience and the cameras, referencing twitter hashtags #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft which have popped up for women to share their stories of domestic abuse.

Vieira also urged women in similar situations to search for help. "If you are going through this get yourself to a shelter, by all means tell somebody what's going on, let somebody know," the host was quoted as saying, adding: "That's just my experience with it and I know it's rampant in this country and we all have to accept the fact that it's not just an issue with the NFL, it's an issue with all of our lives and until we take it seriously more and more women are going to get abused."
