Elizabeth Pena Dead At 55

Elizabeth Pena is dead. She was 55.  



Her family announced on Wednesday that Pena passed away on Tuesday.

Pena died of natural causes after a brief illness at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.



Film reviewer Mario-Francisco Robles, Pena's nephew, confirmed her passing in an article in Latino-Review the following day. The nature of the illness was not disclosed.

Pena was best known for playing in "Jacob's Ladder" and "La Bamba". Last year, she appeared in two episodes in season 4 of "Modern Family" as Pilar, the Colombian mom of Sofia Vergara's character Gloria Pritchett.

The actress also had her own short-lived ABC sitcom in 1987 "I Married Dora," where she portrayed Dora Calderon, the title character. Among her laundry list of other credits are mystery movie "Lone Star", "The Incredibles", "Rush Hour", and, recently, "Matador."



Pena's Hollywood fans, including Zoe Saldana and Eva Longoria, took to twitter after the news surfaced to pay tribute.

Pena leaves behind a husband and two children.
