Vanessa Hudgens To Star In "Gigi" On Broadway
Vanessa Hudgens has finally made the leap from "High School Musical" to a Broadway musical!
The "High School Musical" actress will star in Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe's musical "Gigi", set to make its debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in January before transitioning to New York.
Gigi is set in Paris at the turn of the last century and centers on a teenage girl who unexpectedly falls in love with the playboy for whom she was groomed to be a companion.
It was an Audrey Hepburn-starring play in 1951 before becoming a movie musical starring Leslie Caron and then a stage production in 1973 starring Karin Wolfe .
"Thank Heaven For Little Girls" and "I Remember It Well" are among its memorable tunes.
Hudgens, 25, is absolutely delighted about starring in the project.
Vanessa revealed to the Associated Press: "I think, as an actor, the ultimate dream is to be on Broadway. I think it's the true test. There are no second takes. You've got to bring everything you've got for the most critical of audiences. It's an honor, if anything. I'm over the moon."
"I've never been so ecstatic about a project before," Hudgens was quoted as saying, noting: "I genuinely feel like a child, beaming from ear-to-ear, being taken to Disneyland for the first time. It's something that I actually feel I was born to do."
Hudgens was familiar with the musical and some of its tracks.
"My mom's name is Gina, her nickname's been Gigi. We have a dog named Gigi. Gigi is very prevalent in our lives," Vanessa jokingly added.
"Gigi" will run at the Kennedy Center from January 16 through February 12, 2015.
New York dates and additional cast will be unveiled soon.
