Polly Bergen Dead At 84
Polly Bergen is dead.
According to the Associated Press, the actress and singer died of natural causes at the age of 84 on Saturday, September 20.
Bergen was surrounded by her family and close pals at her property in Southbury, Connecticut.
Bergen was mostly known for portraying horrified wife Peggy Bowden in the original 1962 movie "Cape Fear", and for her character as the first female president in 1964's "Kisses for My President". She was also a remarkable singer and made her debut on Broadway in John Murray Anderson's "Almanac" in 1953.
In recent years, Bergen played Felicity Huffman's mom on the ABC drama series "Desperate Housewives". She portrayed the past mistress of Tony Soprano's late dad on "The Sopranos" in 2004.
Bergen's last big screen part was playing Chris Colfer's grandmother in his 2012 film "Struck By Lightening".
Colfer, 24, honored his former costar via twitter briefly after hearing the sad news of her loss.
"Farewell to my dear friend, Polly. I'm so blessed to have had you in my life. No one could make me smile or laugh like you," Colfer captioned a vintage snapshot of Bergen via Instagram, adding: "I will miss you with all my heart. "Grandma" for a movie, but family for life."
Bergen had emphysema and other ailments in the late 1990s, a result of 50 years of smoking.
Bergen is survived by her kids Peter Fields, Kathy Lander and Pamela Fields, whom she had with her second husband, producer Freddie Fields. The star also leaves behind three grandchildren.
